Hops are rich in terpenes

Both Cannabis and Hops contain abundant amounts of terpenes that have incredible health benefits

Today there is a lot of talk about CBD oil and its health benefits. But one of the most interesting substances that these plants share are the terpenes. The hop plant is a close relative of the Cannabis plant and thus shares a lot of properties, such as the fact that they both contain abundant amounts of terpenes.

You can say that terpenes are organic essences that give plants fragrance and taste. I.e, terpenes are the source for the aroma and taste of fir trees. When you then smell hop varieties that have a scent of fir in them, it's from the same terpenes that are found in the fir. Same goes for pineapple, citrus or any scent and taste whatsoever.

Studies { Link } show that both the cannabis plant and the hop plant are rich in terpenes; up to 5% of their dry mass can contain terpenes.

Some terpenes are relatively well known in biomedicine and have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, while others have barely been studied at all.

The terpenes that have been studied have shown medicinal properties in the form of:

(Hold on, this list is awesome!)

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidants
  • Pain reliever
  • Antispasmodic
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-anxiety
  • Anticarcinogenic
  • Anti-tumor
  • Neuroprotective
  • Antimutagenic
  • Antiallergenic
  • Antibiotics
  • Antidiabetic

The beauty of terpenes is that they are proven harmless and have a low level of toxicity, they are therefore often used as supplements in food and cosmetic products.
